MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A suspect has been arrested after a 45-year-old man was shot to death outside his home Friday evening in Miami Gardens, police confirmed.
The suspect was identified Tuesday as 36-year-old Dennard Isaiah Barnes.
According to police, the shooting was reported shortly after 6 p.m. Friday in the 3500 block of Northwest 213th Street.
Officers arrived at the scene and found the victim, Gabriel Floyd Hubbert, 45, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a local hospital, where he died.
“It ain’t for me. It’s not for me. I’m not doing this for me,” the victim’s wife, Guerla Hubbert, said. “We had six beautiful children -- six. He was not a deadbeat father. He broke his back -- broke his back trying to do what he could.”
According to police, detectives identified the suspect’s vehicle as a 2023 White Dodge Ram van.
“Detectives issued a BOLO for the suspect’s vehicle to neighboring law enforcement agencies,” MGPD said in a news release. “During the course of the investigation, MGPD was notified of a shooting that occurred in the City of North Miami Police Department Jurisdiction involving the same type of suspect vehicle.”
According to police, MGPD detectives were then notified on Saturday that detectives from the Cocoa Police Department had located the suspect’s vehicle and arrested Barnes in connection with a shooting that occurred in their jurisdiction late Friday night, at 11:39 p.m.
“This shooting occurred hours after the homicides in the City of Miami Gardens and the City of North Miami Police Department jurisdiction,” the MGPD news release stated. “Mr. Barnes was also identified as a person of interest in both the City of Miami Gardens Police Department and City of North Miami Police Department homicide investigations.”
Police said Barnes was known by all of the victims. A motive, however, remains unclear.
“He didn’t have a hurt in his heart for people,” Guerla Hubbert said about her husband. “They would do him wrong and he would still forgive him. A man like that is not just anybody. God put that in his heart, soul, spirit.”
Barnes is currently being held without bond at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Jail, pending charges in connection with the homicides in Miami Gardens and North Miami.
“If he saw the guy right now, he would still do what he could,” Guerla Hubbert said. “The guy who shot him -- I pray for your soul. It ain’t mental health. You need Jesus. You didn’t take away my husband. God got him.”
Despite the arrest, MGPD is still requesting the community’s assistance with any additional information regarding Hubbert’s murder.
